From ‘homecoming’ happiness to ‘shoe kick in the kidneys’, riders react to Life Time Grand Prix selections for 2026 off-road series

The majority of the invitation-only field for the 2026 Life Time Grand Prix was confirmed on November 11, providing relief to many of the 44 athletes. There were still six spots to be earned by wildcard selections after Unbound Gravel 200, with some usual suspects from previous Grand Prix seasons now on the outside looking in.

One of the notable absences on the roster was Texas-based Emily Newsom. She took to Instagram for a reaction the day following the Life Time news that she would not return, writing, «This fall has been one of the hardest in my career and that’s saying a lot because I’ve had some doozies. Yesterday it was a pointed shoe kick square in the kidneys reading that I wasn’t accepted into the Life Time Grand Prix.»

Wildcard hunts for men

US riders Dylan Johnson and Russell Finsterwald have been part of the Grand Prix since it launched in 2022, but their streaks ended with news on Tuesday. Johnson said he would focus on «wildcarding my way in next year».

«After four years in Life Time Grand Prix, I didn’t make the cut this time around, and that’s a good thing,» Johnson wrote on Instagram.

«We’re talking about a professional sport here, and I’m not owed anything. The LTGP made a commitment to a merit based selection process which is exactly what they should do. My results weren’t good enough, and it’s as simple as that. I don’t think I would have felt amazing about getting a pity spot anyway, especially if that meant taking a spot from a more deserving rider.

«If I should have made it back in, then I can prove it by wildcarding my way in next year. Does that mean I feel fine about it? Fuck no. I’m devastated by how this year has gone.»

His year included a missed chance to perform at Unbound Gravel due to recovery from a broken tibia, suffered when a drifter of a truck hit him on a training ride. Fellow competitor Payson McElveen suffered a hip fracture earlier at Sea Otter Classic and also missed Unbound. However, results mattered, as McElveen finished 11th in the series and Johnson finished 19th, with McElveen getting a coveted invite.

After three top 6 finishes out of four seasons, Finsterwald was not included as a returning rider for 2026.

«I did apply and while I’m not fully surprised I didn’t make it, I’m a little bummed. I hoped being a former winner of a LTGP round, top 5 finisher and top 5 contender in the first 3 editions would’ve helped my case despite a lackluster 2025 campaign, but no luck,» he told Cyclingnews.

«I do understand and respect LTGP’s decision and plan to fight for one of the wild card spots. I’ve been making a lot of changes this off season which I feel will be conducive to getting me back to the best version of myself, and I look forward to proving I deserve to be apart of the series at Sea Otter and Unbound!»

This last season, Life Time introduced the wildcard entry system, based on results from opening rounds at Sea Otter Classic Gravel and Unbound Gravel 200. Two of the seven participants will be back in 2026 — Cameron Jones and Andrew L’Esperance.

Jones, who made several trips from New Zealand to rise to the Unbound Gravel 200 victory and then the Grand Prix overall championship, earned automatic qualification to the 2026 series. Once L’Esperance earned his way back for a fourth Grand Prix with a wildcard, the Canadian went on to finish seventh overall, his second top 10 in four years.

The wildcard battle will begin anew for Newsom, Johnson and many others on April 16 at the Sea Otter Classic Gravel in Monterey, California.

The majority of the field for the 2026 Life Time Grand Prix was announced today by organisers Life Time, confirming 44 of the final 50 berths in the invitation-only US collection of off-road races.

The women’s roster includes seven new riders, including the top three finishers from the 2025 Gravel Earth Series — overall winner and former Unbound 200 champion Rosa Klöser of Germany, GES silver medalist Karolina Migoń of Poland and USA’s Morgan Aguirre. After a year away from the Grand Prix, three-time US gravel champion Lauren Stephens returns to the mix.

Sofía Gómez Villafañe has been part of the field all five years and will try to hold the overall title for a fourth time. One surprising absence from the start list is 2022 Grand Prix champion Haley Smith, who finished 15th overall this past year.

Ruth Holcomb and Griffin Hoppin ‘closing the gap’ with U23 titles in Life Time Grand Prix

Ruth Holcomb and Griffin Hoppin didn’t just add their names to the confirmed guest list for the 2026 Life Time Grand Prix with their performances this year, but have also marked themselves out as riders that could deliver a solid challenge to many of their rivals in the elite standings next year.

Even before the final invitations have been issued for 2026, the duo solidified their spots for the fifth season by winning the inaugural under-23 competitions in the six-race off-road series this season. Holcomb made a huge statement by sweeping up four race victories as the top U23 woman, while Hoppin earned highest finishes three times for U23 men.

From road to gravel riches

Meanwhile, Holcomb missed the series opener at the Sea Otter Classic Gravel but went on to sweep the next four races as the best-placed U23 woman at Unbound Gravel, Leadville, Chequamegon MTB and Little Sugar. She was happy to perform well at three consecutive mountain bike events, which helped her overcome a challenge by Alexandra Charles, who finished second for U23 women.

«I’m pretty good on a mountain bike, and I’m on good form right now. I’ve had a good series,» she told Cyclingnews at the Big Sugar after-party where she collected her prize. «Honestly, I was top three in the U23, which I knew was doable, and then had a really good race [at Little Sugar], and ended up winning [the overall] here.»

Her DNF at the the hazardous weather shortened Big Sugar therefore didn’t matter, as all she needed to do was hit the start line to claim the U23 series.

«It’s super cool,» said Holcomb of the overall win. «I’m excited about the opportunity, and it’s really nice to have that confirmed for the next year. So it’s gonna be super awesome.»

A native of Durango, Colorado, Holcomb joined the Santa Cruz htSQD off-road team this season and made her gravel debut at BMC Rock Cobbler in California, where she attends UC Santa Barbara. That 73-mile adventure in February with 9,200 feet of climbing was her gravel debut, and she won. Once she hit the Grand Prix circuit at the end of May, she never looked back.

«I raced road for a couple years, and raced mountain bike before that, so I have a variety of experience. Today [at Big Sugar] was almost like a road race. So it’s definitely been super helpful to know how the road tactics were,» she said about having two seasons with the Virginia’s Blue Ridge-TWENTY24 programme.

But she almost gave up racing last winter. Then she decided to try some long-distance off-road racing with a new team, the htSQD.

«At this time last year I had decided I was done bike racing for good until I got the opportunity to give endurance racing a go with the htSQD. I really don’t think I could’ve ever imagined how great this opportunity would be for me.

«I really have the best team ever. I mean, Keegan [Swenson], Tobin [Ortenblad], Alexis [Skarda], they’ve really just been so helpful this year, and I’ve learned so much. They’re proud of me, and have really supported me. So I’m really happy with how the year has gone and how my team has been,» she said.

Next year Holcomb and Hoppin step up to the elite competitions, which means going from Unbound Gravel 100 to 200. They will also be eligible for the elevated prize money on offer for the 2026 Life Time Grand Prix that is now $590,000, of which the top 10 in the elite field will share in a $350,000 purse, and individual prize money at the six events will range from $30,000 to $60,000.

‘I don’t want to focus on it too early’ – MTB World Champion Alan Hatherly playing the ‘long game’ when it comes to road career

Mountain Bike World Champion Alan Hatherly has said he’s playing the «long game» when it comes to his WorldTour career on the road, not wanting to rush into the discipline after joining Jayco AlUla at the start of the season.

Hatherly got his WT road career off to a bang in 2025 after impressing throughout the AlUla Tour in Saudi Arabia, where he finished third and second on the key climbing days and sixth overall as a fellow multi-discipline star, Tom Pidcock (Q36.5), rode to victory.

«Obviously for me, coming from MTB where the duration needed is 90 minutes, so VO2 max pretty much, whereas here it’s four to five hours on a solid tempo threshold, and it’s about being able to deliver in that last hour where it’s quite difficult – that’s where all the races are exploding and there’s very few guys making it nowadays.»

Hatherly had respect for what Pidcock, whose best results have mostly come in MTB, has managed to do in 2025, finishing third on GC at the Vuelta a España, but did point out how much of the off-road discipline the Brit has cut out of his schedule to do so.

“I’ve been working towards an XCO win my whole career. This year I’ve been close a couple of times, so to finish it off like this is unreal,» said Aldridge.

“It’s so nice to win here in Mont-Sainte-Anne because it’s very special,» said the French victor at the Canadian race in the French speaking province of Quebec.

«Charlie [Aldridge] helped me a lot, he rode on the front and today we played for the win. We worked super-well together. I think the sport is changing and we need to ride with a team-mate for the win. I think we did it perfectly today.”

Christopher Blevins (Specialized Factory Racing) was the overall short-track series victor – having claimed the top spot before Mont-Sainte-Anne – while Martin was second in the series and Aldridge third.
